The Tactic

They tricked me. And I ended up subscribing to their newsletter.

Here’s the sequence of what happened:

  • I enter a website that has an email capture

  • Scroll a bit through it, but don’t subscribe

  • Then switch pages but leave the tab open (as I often do)

  • Suddenly, this bad boy appears 👇

  • So I come back to the page (First win, they won back someone who already left)

  • I notice a notification bell. I obviously HAVE to click it because that’s what you do with notifications (Second win, curiosity)

  • A sidebar appears with what I assume are their top articles and newsletter issues with a CTA to check them out

  • I click and they get me to see the content (3rd win, make me check out the content when I was initially away from the page)

They got back a lost subscriber because of that tiny change on the site’s favicon.

Pretty cool huh?

🕵️‍♂️ How to Steal it?

I assume this is done with a plug-in (haven’t found which one yet), but can also be coded or even done with no-code.

What you should leave with: give people a reason to come back to your page if they leave.

If you don’t want to go that far, the minimum you could do is changing your favicon image for the same image but with a “notification”.

I’m actually testing something similar for my website redesign! You’ll see soon
